Socialization

What is Socialization and what kind do we want our children to be learning?

Many professionals in the educational field will gasp when they hear of any parent taking their children out to homeschool them and one of their first concerns will be, "What about socialization?" They worry that a child won't be able to socialize without being in a class with the same age peers all day long.

When parents that homeschool their childen think of socialization, they think of lifelong relating skills that their children will need for the future. They think of interpersonal relationship skills needed for marriage. They think of relating to people of varying ages. What they do not think of is being confined to a classroom of same age peers all day long where the pack rat mentality comes into play and a child actually learns to be able to only relate to children his own age and cannot relate to children of other ages. Homeschooled children are better able to get along with people in all different age groups, both young and old. Homeschooling children are extremely independent because they do go to the grocery store with mom and dad and help more with chores and household responsibilities than most other kids that spend close to 8 hours a day at school. Trips to the grocery store, the doctor, the dry cleaners; these are all opportunities for social experiences.
